Benefits : To the Community
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

A community-based micro-hydro system is designed for the community and involves community education and participation at every level.
When it is completed the people of Bario Asal and Arur Layun will be equipped to maintain and manage their own micro-hydro, manage the Pa Merario watershed and assist other villages who intend to implement micro-hydro systems of their own. Ownership and responsibility is an important component in ensuring the sustainability of this project.

A JKKK Bario Asal and JKKK Arur Layun sub-committee (Appendix C) has been set up to oversee the design and implementation of the project, which is targeted to be completed before the end of 2007 (Appendix D). As this is a community-based project all labour will be supplied by the longhouse residents and their families. Funding for the project will be raised within the community from household contributions and donations from friends of the community. A total of RM 200,000.00 (Appendix B) will be needed to see this project through.

The project will bring socio-economic development to the community as villagers can utilize the power for small scale businesses such as woodwork, laundry services, tailoring and running computers and printers. Villagers can also run shared freezers and washing machines and make better use of the night hours in a well lit environment.

Other benefits include the empowerment of the Kaum Ibu or Village Women’s Association. The Kaum Ibu already have visions of using the available power to mill rice and rice flour and produce senape (rice cakes) and keropok (crackers) for sale to surrounding villages. They also intend to use the electricity to produce handicrafts that can be marketed locally or exported.
