11th January, 2003
We regret to announce that Mayu Aran of Arur Layun, age 86, passed away in Miri after a long illness on 11th January, 2003. The funeral was held in Miri on 12th January.
We offer our deepest condolences to her children: Salang Raan, Pasa Aran, Munan Aran, Ganang Aran and Supang Aran.

It appears that the Layang Layang Skyvan is finally available to the Bario people.
It has been making two or three flights into Bario each day, and the fuel crisis is now over, even if it does cost M$18 per gallon for either petrol or diesel.

RTM filmcrew re-arranging our padi fields!
Bario is still flavour of the month! The latest crop of visitors, all from Kuala Lumpur, included a five-man RTM crew, and one journalist each from

Utusan Melayu, Tamil Nesan, The China Press and Straits Times, not to mention three members from BERAS Corporation.
Apparently, there is a plan afoot to launch an all-out campaign to put Bario rice on the international market!
A gotong-royong harvest session by the people of Bario Asal, Arur Dalan and Arur Layun, planned for the film crew, provided some entertaining moments. What with Balang Doo having to say the prayers three times (for repeated film takes), a buffet lunch, and the film crew finding out that the water in the field was muddier and deeper than they had expected, a great time was had by all - even though very little rice was actually harvested!

Toys for Boys

The latest "Toys for Boys", a 500cc 4-wheel drive Suzuki QuadRunner, has arrived in Bario, courtesy the Forestry Department. The young men are examining it very closely and giving it a quick whirl around the airport any chance they get.
Not to be outdone, one of the ladies has acquired a smaller 150cc version, though not a 4-wheel drive!
