CURTIN TO COLLABORATE IN R&D WITH PLAYERS IN OIL, GAS INDUSTRY

MIRI: The Chancellor of Curtin University of Technology Gordon Martin wants the university to collaborate with major players in the country’s oil and gas industry in research and development (R&D) projects they could carry out jointly via the sharing of resources.

Gordon was speaking to reporters after witnessing the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Curtin Sarawak Campus, Murphy Sarawak Oil Co Ltd and Nippon Oil Exploration (Malaysia) Ltd yesterday. The oil and gas industry and the Malaysian government stand to benefit from the R&D projects.

Gordon proposed that the oil and gas industry come up with the research project, and the Federal Government would match its funding ringgit for ringgit. Present were the pro vice-chancellor Curtin Sarawak Campus Professor John Evans, dean of  Curtin Sarawak Campus Professor Ruth Marquis, Murphy general manager Mike Shirley and Nippon Oil managing director Akio Suzuki.

When asked by reporters whether the proposition was limited to Murphy and Nippon, Gordon said it also included major petroleum companies like Shell and Petronas. He said there was great demand for human capitals in this sector, and it was vital that graduates produced by universities were relevant to the industry.

Another objective of the MoU was for Curtin Sarawak Campus to conduct a Diploma in Process Plant Technology – Oil Industry, a course developed in consultation with the oil and gas industry.

This course will run for two years for a major student cohort sponsored by Murphy, and a smaller student cohort sponsored by Nippon.

This initiative by Curtin, Murphy and Nippon would provide an excellent opportunity for students in East Malaysia to receive a significant and valuable tertiary education that equips  them to server the oil and gas industry, and thus contribute to the development of critical mass in the region.
