Three Agriculture Department Crop Protection Officers from the Kuching Headquarters arrived in Bario yesterday for a four-day visit.

Their mission: to assess the current level of infestation by the Golden Apple Snail.  This mollusc, a major padi field pest in most Asian rice-growing countries, was brought to Bario some years ago by transient Indonesian workers.  The verdict was that Bario's snail population has not yet been completely eradicated, that the situation needs to be monitored constantly to avoid crop damage in the future.

Bario's Internet Cafe is back to its intermittant schedules once again, sometimes closed all day, sometimes open for short periods only.  They are believed to be experiencing both power as well as communication problems.  Many would-be users have started gravitating towards the secondary school so that they can check their e-mail!  (See next report)

Bario's telephones are currently entirely out of whack!  The telephone at the airport has been in a state of suspended animation for quite a while now, and is expected to remain so.  The ones by the shops, half-heartedly functional at the best of times, still do not work despite the best efforts of a visiting Telekoms technician.  The only working telephone in Bario now is the one at the Clinic: Telephone No: 971047!

Word is out that the Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Francis Harden anak Hollis, will be arriving in Bario on 24th February, along with several senior Agriculture Department officers.  The Minister has expressed a wish to see the extent of the problem and make an assessment of infestation levels for himself.  A meeting on the Golden Apple Snail problem is also scheduled to be held in Bario on the same day.
